A total of 8,241 passed the 2020-2021 Philippine Bar examinations, the Supreme Court announced Tuesday, April 12.

Out of the 11,402 takers who finished the exams, a record of 72.28% passed the Bar exam. This is higher than 2019’s 27.36%.

Supreme Court Justice Marvin Leonen said 14 Bar takers had “excellent” performance having acquired grades higher than 90%.

The University of the Philippine produced the most number of excellent takers at four, followed by Ateneo de Manila University at two.

Meanwhile, the Arellano University, Ateneo de Davao, Far Eastern University, San Beda University, University of Cebu, and University of Cordillera produced one apiece.

“The bar examination for 2020 and 2021 cannot be compared with any past bar examinations. These were conducted under challenging circumstances never before faced by any bar examinee, let alone any bar chairperson,” Leonen said in a statement.

“The 11,790 bar applicants went through not only several waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also a super typhoon that battered the Visayas region, and the uncertainties brought about by the effects of the pandemic and adjustments of its corresponding health regulations,” he added.

The Supreme Court suspended the conduct of the Bar examinations in 2020 and 2021.

Instead of the traditional four-day exam on Sundays, the previous Bar exams were held in two days.

For the first time, the exams were also held on multiple sites. – ag
