The oil spill from the submerged MT Princess Empress off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro has reached the waters of Caluya municipality in Antique, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Saturday, March 4.
According to PCG District Western Visayas, the oil spill was monitored along the shorelines of Barangay (Brgy) Tinogboc in Sitio Sabang, Brgy. Simbolo in Liwagao Island, and Sitio Tambak, Brgy. Semirara in Caluya, affecting 600 residents in the area.
In its recent update, at least eight drums of “oily waste” were collected by the PCG and the local government units of Sitio Sabang.
Oil spill-affected towns were placed under state of calamity
The coastal town of Pola in Oriental Mindoro has been placed under a state of calamity, also due to oil spill.
In an interview Friday, Pola Mayor Jennifer Cruz said the town’s seawater and shoreline have turned black and the oil spill resulted in fish kill. – gb
