Mt. Bulusan spews ash; Alert Level 1 up

Mount Bulusan, the fourth most active volcano in the country, had a phreatic explosion on Sunday morning, June 5.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Renato Solidum said another eruption activity may still possibly occur. Phivolcs has since placed Mount Bulusan under Alert Level 1.

“Alert Level 1 status is now raised over Bulusan Volcano, which means that it is currently in an abnormal condition.Local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone must be strictly prohibited and that vigilance in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone on the southeast sector must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous eruptions,” Phivolcs said.

Meanwhile, civil aviation authorities are urged to advise their pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

Residents surrounding the volcano are likewise told to be vigilant to lahars when heavy rainfall occurs during the phreatic eruption. – KC/gb
